Solar Eclipses are big news and a “total solar eclipse” for many people is a once in a life-time experience. The good news is, if you haven’t yet had that experience or opportunity, on August 21st if you are situated in the right place you’ll get your chance to watch this amazing event. This is the first time since 1776 that the total solar eclipse will take place exclusively in the United States and many small towns, including Blue Ridge and Morganton, GA will in direct alignment for the viewing. In fact Blue Ridge is considered one of the top 8 locations in the United States to view the eclipse!
Many people travel all around the world to catch a glimpse of a solar eclipse and we get to enjoy it right here in the beautiful North Georgia Mountains! What a perfect opportunity to get the family together for one last summer vacation. Not only can you enjoy a luxury cabin rental but the kids will also have a wonderful science lesson right off the back deck of your private little haven.
The eclipse happening on August 21st will be a total eclipse of the sun, which is a much different experience then a partial eclipse. We decided to do a little bit of research to educate our readers on just what that means! Here are a few fun facts we found:
Before the solar eclipse occurs, you will notice that the lighting changes, temperature changes, animals may get confused that night time is falling.
There are two types of eclipses – a total eclipse and a partial eclipse. The one we will be experiencing on August 21st will be a total eclipse. This is where the moon will completely cover the sun for a brief period of time during the day!
Total eclipses are few and far between! Several continents may not even experience an eclipse for several decades!
It is important to educate yourself on what will occur during the eclipse so you don’t miss out! There are different “contact times” that you need to be aware of if you are planning on watching the eclipse! The moment the lunar disk touches the solar disk in the sky and begins to block the light is referred to as C1. The C1 phase will last for several seconds and you will be able to see the lunar disk move across the sun for quite some time. This can usually take about an hour for the moon to fully cover the sun.
Directly after, C2 begins to happen. C2 is the time when the lunar disk directly covers the sun. This may only last for a few seconds before C3 occurs. C3 is the moment when the sun starts to beam out from behind the moon again! The lunar disk then begins to exit from in front of the sun and this process takes about an hour to occur. Take a look around during this phase! We are told that it looks like a 365 degree sun rise!
The last and final phase is C4. C4 is the exact moment that the moon stops covering the sun at all. Be sure to plan ahead and order some glasses that are made for direct solar viewing!
