What to Know Before You Visit North Georgia in May
What’s the Weather Like in North Georgia in May?
May begins to get warm in and around Ellijay. Highs average in the low- to mid-80s, with lows staying near 60. You couldn’t ask for better weather to enjoy Georgia’s breathtaking Blue Ridge Mountains. The warming weather and spring rains bring the landscape to life. No matter where you go, you’ll be surrounded by vibrant vegetation for as far as your eyes can see.
Go Kayaking
With warm temperatures in the 80s during the day, it’s the ideal weather to enjoy some time on the water. Lucky for you, there are many different waterways to choose from. You’ll find Blue Ridge Lake just east of Blue Ridge and Nottely Lake just a bit farther. Both are fantastic lakes to explore with many places to put in and rent equipment along the water. If you prefer a river or creek, there is certainly no shortage! We recommend the Toccoa River Canoe Trail. It offers incredible scenery along the way as well as some thrills with a few rapids. The trail also boasts great fishing!
Enjoy Some Local Wine
Spring is a wonderful time to sip on some wine surrounded by green and luscious mountains. There are more than a dozen places to get a local glass of wine scattered along the mountains of our region, making it a wine lover’s paradise. A few of our favorites include Cartecay Vineyards in Ellijay, Serenberry’s Vineyards in Morganton, and Bear Claw Vineyards in Blue Ridge. With almost two dozen vineyards in North Georgia, it’s hard to decide which winery to visit first. Maybe hire a private guide and make a day of sampling these delicious harvests. Or, you can try all the wines in one place. Each year on the first weekend in May, the Georgia Mountain Fairgrounds host the Hiawassee Highlands Wine Festival. It takes place at the Hamilton Rhododendron Gardens, so you can also experience the beautiful flowers in full bloom.
Attend Spring Arts in the Park
Each year, the Blue Ridge Mountains Arts Association hosts two art festivals in the City Park, one in the spring and one in the fall. Spring Arts in the Park typically takes place on Memorial Day weekend. It features more than 170 artists, exhibitors, and vendor booths, along with great food and drinks. This anticipated event draws 20,000 attendants annually and has been around for more than 40 years, so you won’t want to miss it.
